The Universal Roller Skid.

An international wholesaler of plumbing products approached us with a problem. They sell video cameras designed to inspect various size pipes. The cameras are pushed through hundreds of feet of plastic, metal and concrete pipe ranging from 4 to 18 diameter. A major problem was that residue left in the bottom of the pipe caused the camera to plunge through this material, obstructing the cameras view. Also, constant dragging over rough surfaces like cement were destroying these very expensive cameras.

There is a product that can hold the cameras, but they are not easy to adjust, cannot overcome obstacles like simple 90 degree turns. They are made of machined aluminum and each unit must be handcrafted adding a great deal of expense to the product.

Working with the customer to gain knowledge of the plumbing trade and determine possible obstacles, we developed the Roller Skid. It began as most products do, from a rough sketch (fig 1). We machined various prototypes for field experimentation and improved each model (fig 2).

Our final design exceeded their expectations (fig 3). Here are some of its features:

  1. Automatically adjusts to holes ranging from 6 to 18 (fig 4).
  2. Uses thumb screws to hold the camera but easily released for cleaning.
  3. Automatically will stays on center of the pipe. Spring tension allows it to maintain contact with the pipe walls.
  4. Negotiates 90 degree turns.
  5. Have surface mounting areas for extra light attachments
  6. Safety harness to retract the product should it get stuck.
  7. It’s lightweight.
And of course, all the major components are made of plastic.

The U.R.S. is molded, machined, assembled, and shipped right from our factory here in Pittsfield Mass., To places all over the world. Attachments are for this product are in development in order to add even more value for the end user.

The “Mini Roller Skid” is almost ready for production. This product will accommodate pipes from 4 to 5 inches diameter (fig 5). …. Keep watching this site for more details.
